Social Media for Creative Types

Feb 9, 2012 by

One of the questions I get a lot in my line of business is how creative types – photographers, writers, artists, etc. – can use social media marketing to get more business. The stereotype is that creative types aren’t good at business, but this is far from true.

In fact, one of the things that I tell people that ask this is that they, if anyone, has a huge advantage when it comes to social media marketing. I had a Southwest landscape photographer ask me about social media and that’s exactly what I told him.

Why?

Simply because, they are used to thinking outside the box to begin with. If you take someone who’s been to business school, been in the corporate workplace and knows their way around business, they will have no problems telling you that social media is an integral part of business in today’s world.

But will they be really able to show you how to creatively use social media to further their business? Chances are, it’ll be difficult for them to come up with something concrete. This is because social media isn’t a traditional business concept. It takes a little bit of creativity and outside-the-box thinking to make sure you’re doing it in the most effective way.

So for the creative people out there, this is great news. Social media isn’t an old, stagnant business concept. It’s fresh, it’s new and it thrives on creative ideas. So instead of being turned off by the business part of social media, embrace the creative side and you’ll know exactly how it works!

How One Site Turned to Social Media When It Mattered Most

Jan 28, 2012 by

When Cash That Junk Car decided that it needed to jumpstart its social media, the site decided to do what it knew best: marketing itself online. So the site started a Twitter account, Facebook profile and countless other social media profiles.

Instead of covering all of them out there, they stuck to a handful of reputable sites and immediately started gaining a following for each one. Although it took time, they eventually saw the payoff and realized that the social media game really was part of their core marketing strategy.

“We realized that without social media, we didn’t have half a chance of really getting to know our customer base,” said Daryl Reynolds. “Using social media alone, we got the chance to brand ourselves and really show people what we were about. And it was all done on the cheap.”

Reynolds is quick to point out that although it’s cheap, it does take the ultimate investment of time. But he’s used to putting in time. One of his latest SEO campaigns was to target cash for junk cars NJ customers, and that’s something that, like social media, is a matter of time.

“We’re just now starting to see the benefits. It’s a long-term game with social media and SEO, but it’s well worth it. In the end, your business is going to come out stronger and the better for it.”

Why Do Businesses Need Social Media?

Feb 28, 2012 by

It’s a question just about every business has asked itself at one time or another. A few years ago, social media would’ve been a helpful but not-required business marketing aspect, but in today’s market, it’s pretty much a requisite of doing business.

So why do businesses today need social media?

The simple answer is that it’s the best way to genuinely connect to their customers. When you use traditional marketing tactics that rely on forcing messages on customers, it’s a one-way line of communication that doesn’t allow the customer to properly provide feedback.

But with social media, businesses have the chance to hear the concerns of their audiences, and audiences have the opportunity to voice their opinions to organizations that will actually hear them out, not just ignore them.

So it’s a mutual situation, and once you start to get into business social media, you’ll start to see the immense benefits of going social. Unlike more traditional marketing initiatives, it’s often difficult to see the ROI from social media, but once you realize that the investment can’t be measured the same way a proper asset or service can be, you’ll see the direct and indirect benefits of social media.

With that said, if your business has been slow to adopt social media, now’s the perfect time to get started. It could be a great way to connect with your customers, and in the end, it will give a personal, genuine look to your business that it may lack or may want to strengthen.

How One Website Used Social Media to Break the Competition

Feb 18, 2012 by

In the auto industry, there’s a niche for junk cars – specifically, for those looking to get cash for junk cars by trading in their old vehicles for money. It’s still an evolving industry, and for anyone who is involved in it, they know that there is a lot of misinformation out there.

But luckily, one site was able to go above and beyond with social media to deliver exactly what the common customer in this industry needed. The site, Cash That Junk Car, used Twitter, Facebook and other smaller networks to generate attention for its junk car program. Once the social media tactics were in place, the site found the following to be helpful:

Ask, Don’t Just Talk
Instead of talking constantly to your audience through social media, ask them things. Engage! Only then will you see what they really need.

Offer Value
Don’t just promote what you offer, give value in the right frame and context. Only then will your audience see you as an authority.

Don’t Over Do It
Social media is great, but like anything, needs to be approached with moderation. Don’t over do it and you won’t annoy your audience.

These can be applied to just about any industry, and the junk car industry was no different. By using these tactics and other social media techniques, this site was able to break the competition and get leaps and bounds ahead of where they were before using social media.
